ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

LIVESTOCK EMISSIONS

The Australian livestock industry has reduced its emissions by 57.6% over the last 11 years, and now accounts for around 10% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Whilst this is good progress, we know more needs to be done. That is why the Australian red meat industry is the first in the world to make a commitment to being carbon neutral by 2030.

This bold strategy is based on research conducted jointly by MLA and the Australian government’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), and will involve:

  • Vegetation protection
  • Research into feed additives and vaccines to reduce methane emissions from live animals
  • Carbon sequestration including reforestation and managed regrowth
  • Carbon offsetting

MLA invests millions of dollars annually into research and development, including on carbon emission reduction. We also provide guidance and support in uptake of sustainable solutions across Australian farms.
